FAQ
Why do my friends complain about their hearing aids?

Basically, it's a tuning issue.  The response curve of the hearing aid is not "following" the requirement curve of the ear.  It's too loud where they don't need it, and not loud enough where they do.  This is why they're continually adjusting the volume control (if they have one) or frustrated if they do not have one.

Should I wear one hearing aid or two?

It's a matter of balance.  As a rule of thumb, what does it take to maintain an equal loudness from either ear (side)?  Balanced ears can tell where a sound is coming from, without turning their head to find the loudest direction.  However, a lot of people BUY 2 hearing aids and end up only wearing one because the type of aid worn/selected is blocking off the good low frequency natural hearing.  Deficient hearing cannot afford to lose audibility and range.  Proper testing illustrates this, and shows how you can correct both ears to the same level and not plug up both ears.

Why doesn't everyone test like Hearing Aids of Texas?

Good question.  In the hearing aid field, there are many DOCTORATE and post graduate degreed people who are looked at as authorities in the field, but to see how they approach hearing aid fitting is more like the approach of a 3rd grade science class drop out.  I would expect that at some point, a PHD would recognize that testing with an audiogram does not relate well with the design characteristics of a hearing aid and would abandon the approach immediately, something we did almost 40 years ago.

What should I expect from my new hearing aid?

Simply, good hearing.  The TV is set at the same level as a normal hearing person, and it sounds natural.  There will be no drawbacks to hearing well, and the hearing aid should be comfortable to wear

Why is digital better than analog?

Digital is better for two reasons.  First, because all digital hearing aids are non-linear, the computer is always adjusting the gain so that the sum of the input and gain will not exceed the saturation sound pressure level (SSPL) of the instrument and cause distortion because of peak clipping. Clarity is always there.  Secondly, because the programming of the instrument is done by the dispenser on his/her computer, control of the response curve is expanded and more parameters can be adjusted; compromises are nearly eliminated.

I'm embarrassed if people see my hearing aid.
How can I hide it?

The small, slim designs used at Hearing Aids of Texas are very inconspicuous.  People are always pleasantly surprised at how little, can be seen, if at all.  When they factor in the hearing ability and how much easier it makes their life, the vanity issue (becomes a non-factor) disappears.  We hear all the time about people not telling their friends and loved ones that they are wearing hearing instruments, and not being noticed for 2 weeks.

Why do I hear people "talking" but I don't
understand the words?

Human hearing generally deteriorates in the high frequency area.  The low frequency area is usually okay.  The issue is that soft high frequency speech sounds are not audible.  The high frequency sounds are the consonants, like S, P, T and CH.  If you don't hear these sounds loud enough to recognize, then you say, "huh" or "what".  The TV is turned up loud, looking for clarity.  You hear people talking (low sounds) but you don't understand the words (high frequency) because parts of the words aren't available.  It’s like a lighted sign with some of the lights burned out.  You’re not getting all the information being conveyed.
